The Research Center for Integrated Disaster Risk Management, CIGIDEN (https://cigidenweb.ing.uc.cl) is a multidisciplinary research center funded by the Chilean Agency for Research and Development, ANID. CIGIDEN brings together researchers from various fields (e.g., Sociology, Urban Planning, Geography, Psychology, Engineering, and Geosciences) and is supported by Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (www.uc.cl), Universidad Católica del Norte (www.ucn.cl), Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (www.usm.cl), and the Universidad Nacional Andrés Bello (www.unab.cl). Thus, its research team is located in Santiago, Valparaíso, and Antofagasta.  The aim of CIGIDEN is to produce outstanding interdisciplinary research on all aspects of the disaster cycle (preparedness, response, participation, recovery, and mitigation), thus seeking to reduce the disaster impacts and build more resilient communities.

The Postdoctoral Position

To support and encourage our research work, CIGIDEN is offering post-doctoral research position associated with Work-Package #5 “Climate-induced risks in territories and the built environment”. Specifically, WP#5 is focused on the different challenges posed by fires and heatwaves to communities, institutions, and the natural and built environment in central and central-south Chile.

We encourage candidates from different disciplines and with different expertise to apply. The successful applicant is expected to complement the work developed by our researchers in one or more of the following topics:

  • Community-based early warning systems and response for fire resilience.
  • Locally sensitive early warning systems and response for heatwaves and extreme heat.
  • Climate-resilient territorial planning and governance for fire-resilient development.
  • Mapping social and/or physical determinants of heat and/or fire vulnerability.
  • Disaster risk governance and planning associated to extreme heat and/or fires.
  • Fire modeling to comprehend and predict fire behavior.
  • Land regulation and urban governance associated with heat and/or fire prevention and reconstruction.

Candidates will become a part of the team working in different projects within the research cluster, contributing to the interaction and productivity in collaboration with the other research clusters of CIGIDEN. Also, candidates will be encouraged to participate in the different outreach activities and programs of CIGIDEN with the objective of transferring the scientific knowledge to different communities in the country, such as professionals and practitioners, and K-12 education.

The position is full time until the end of November 2025 and a maximum of 3 years, pending funding approval and an internal evaluation.

The successful applicant is expected to reside in Santiago, Chile and she/he will receive a gross monthly salary of  $2.147.250 Chilean pesos.

The Center will also cover air ticket and allocation costs in Santiago and help will also be provided for obtaining a working visa.

Required qualifications

  • The candidate must hold a doctorate degree (Ph.D) in a research area related to the description of topics presented above.
  • Publications in international indexed journals, conference publications and presentations will be valued.
  • The candidate should must be fluent in English, particularly for writing purposes.
  • Programming skills or experience with geographic information systems will also be valued in the evaluation of applicants.
  • Experience in teaching, supervising undergraduate and graduate students, engaging in outreach and transfer activities, participation in research projects, and other professional and research working experience are a plus.

Minimum expected achievements by the end of the period

The researcher should submit at least one WoS-indexed paper to a scientific journal, and submit a proposal for an ANID postdoctoral grant.

The successful candidate is also expected to actively participate in the activities of CIGIDEN.

Application

The call is open until March 15st,  2024. The postdoctoral position is available immediately and open until filled.

To apply, please submit the following documentation:
