The FONDAP National Research Center for integrated Natural Disasters Management; Chile (CIGIDEN) is a non-profit Chilean institution devoted to developing an integrated understanding of disasters. CIGIDEN is integrated by scientists from geo-natural, technological-engineering and social sciences. The center develops empirical and integrated observations to understand the impact of disasters. The mission of the center is to develop scientific knowledge to mitigate the negative impact of disasters on the welfare of the country. Chile is an exceptional country to test ideas for disaster mitigation.
One of the six primary research lines encompasses solid earth processes and associated hazards(earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and mass wasting) and CIGIDEN is seeking a motivated scientist who is interested in assessing the magnitude of volcanic activity during historical times in Chile. The Postdoc position will be devoted to implementing a database of eruptive activity during historical times in Chile based on official and non-official reports, with the objective to determine and/or correct the magnitude of these eruptions, which will help to better determine the possible effects of future eruptions. Ability to communicate results to researchers from other disciplinary lines is highly required. The selected researcher will have to generate scientific publications in high impact peer reviewed journals. The position would be guaranteed until December 2020. Postdoc position will be developed at the Universidad Católica del Norte in Antofagasta
Qualifications
– PhD in Volcanology, Earth Sciences or similar.
– Strong mathematical, statistical and programming skills (Matlab, Linux)
– Computation and computer assisting data processing is desirable.
